Studio RED was selected to perform a complex, multi-phased renovation on the iconic Jones Hall, originally built in the 1960s. To allow for ongoing performances, construction is occurring when the Symphony Hall is dark and all phases of work were completed in 2025.
In 2021 and 2022 the design team updated the side walls to provide better acoustics, replaced the veneer in the hall and created safe areas in the catwalks and lighting positions. Work also included adding a new AV room above the stage, new orchestra lift/seat wagons, new stage flooring, laying the foundation for an updated AV, lighting and IT infrastructure and new restrooms with better access from the lobby.
In 2023, the team replaced all seating and reconfigured the layout from continental seating to include aisles and less doors, better controlling sound and light. Additionally, AV and lighting improvements will continue, a new green room was created and updates made to lobby finishes.
2024 projects included acoustic enhancements by adding a new ceiling reflector, new motorized rigging, enhanced Audio and Video installation, and a new green room. The final phase of work for the project began in 2025 and includes a new accessible patron entry, updated dock, and dressing room.
