The Midtown Arts & Theatre Center Houston (MATCH), designed by Studio RED Architects and Lake | Flato, earned the ULI 2017 Development of Distinction Award in the Not-for-Profit category. MATCH was one of six winners named at the 10th annual awards ceremony held on January 24 at the Rice Crystal Ballroom in Houston. MATCH was nominated alongside the Houston Zoo: Gorillas of the African Forest and The Boys and Girls Club – Richmond-Rosenberg.
“The cultural anchor for Midtown was designed to meet the needs of Houston’s 540 cultural arts groups,” ULI said about MATCH. “With 46,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor multi-use theatrical and exhibition space, including four theaters, the MATCH facility marks a significant cultural contribution to Houston and was designed with the organization’s mission of neighborhood revitalization by working with amenities such as easily accessible public transportation and walkability of the surrounding landscape.”
Studio RED Principal Bill Neuhaus and Partner Jared Wood were on hand to accept the award, along with MATCH Executive Director Chuck Still, Kerry Phillips of Lake | Flato and Jill Jewett of Jewett Consulting.
Jared notes, “It was truly a pleasure to work on this unique community-focused project. MATCH is more than just a theater, it’s a space that brings together arts organizations from across the city and engages the public. It’s exciting to see the team’s hard work recognized.”
The Development of Distinction Awards is an annual distinguished award program that recognizes developments which exemplify best practices in design, construction, economic viability, marketing, management and make a positive impact on community health.
